Craine - The Quest For Thomas Henry

What is this all about?

Thomas Henry Craine is my Great Grandfather. He died in 1919 aged 71 and was buried in a Sheffield cemetery. I am trying to find out where he began his life and who his parents were.

What is the mystery?

Family legend said that he had come to England from the Isle of Man. Therefore I was rather surprised when I checked the 1871 and 1881 census information at the Sheffield Archive Services (where his surname is given as Crain) to find that he gave his place of birth as Stockport in the county of Cheshire. A visit to Stockport Library revealed no sign of Thomas Henry in the 1861 or 1851 census. The St. Catherine's House index showed no record of his birth in England and Wales. Possible candidates are a 3 year old Thomas Crane in the 1851 census at Preston (unlikely) and a 3 year old Thomas W Craine in the 1851 Isle of Man census (the W could be a mis-read H).

Can you help me?

Thomas Henry had 11 children (as far as I know) and now has many decendants. If you are one of them perhaps you have records or information that could help me to find out more about Thomas Henry Craine. I would love to hear from you. Perhaps you live on the Isle of Man and have some information that could help me or perhaps you are a Craine just wanting to say "Hello", again I would love to hear from you.
